Stanislav I Thurzo

Stanislav I Thurzo was a 15th-century Bishop of the Czech Diocese of Olomouc.〔( Bishop Stanislav Thurzó ) at Catholic Hierarchy Website〕
Although a Catholic he was the son of Jan Thurzo a protestant Hungarian nobleman of the Thurzó family who was Mayor of Krakow, and his first wife, Ursula Boehm. He was educated at Padua in theology and law and was made canon in Olomouc.
He was a humanist〔Mikuláš Teich, Dušan Kováč, Martin D. Brown, ''Slovakia in History'' Cambridge University Press ( page 64 )〕〔Érasme, Collected Works of Erasmus: Letters 1535 to 1657 : January–December 1525,( page 473 )〕 and patron of the arts and science, but also undertook radical moral reforms in his diocese,〔( Stanislav Thurzo ) at the Arcidiecéze of olomoucká website〕 and persecution of protestant groups. He and his brother jointly crowned both Louis Jagiello, and King of Bohemia Ferdinand I.
Stanislav died in the night 17 April 1540 and was buried in Saint Wenceslas Cathedral, Olomouc.
